Motor Neuron Disease
Also known as: MND, ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Lou Gehrig's Disease
A group of progressive neurological disorders that destroy motor neurons, the cells controlling voluntary muscle activity including speaking, walking, breathing, and swallowing. ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is the most common form. As the disease progresses, people lose the ability to control movement while often retaining cognitive function and eye movement. This makes eye tracking and gaze-based assistive technologies particularly valuable for communication and computer access in later stages of the condition.
