Dwell Activation

Also known as: Dwell Click, Dwell Selection

An input method where an action is triggered by maintaining focus on a target for a specified period of time (the dwell time). Commonly used with eye tracking and head tracking systems, dwell activation allows users to select items without needing to physically click. While reducing the need for motor actions, dwell-based interaction has drawbacks: it can be slow, frustrating when unintended selections occur, and the "Midas touch" problem arises when users cannot look at interface elements without accidentally activating them. Many systems combine gaze pointing with alternative confirmation methods like switches or facial gestures.
