Preservice Training

Also known as: Preservice Education, Teacher Preparation

The education and training that teachers receive before entering the profession, typically through university degree programs or certification courses. In special education and assistive technology contexts, preservice training refers to coursework on AT devices, accessibility principles, and instructional strategies completed during teacher preparation programs. Research suggests that preservice AT training alone is insufficient to ensure technology proficiency, as devices evolve rapidly and student needs vary widely. Effective preservice programs increasingly combine device-specific instruction with strategies for ongoing professional learning and community engagement.
