Articulation Disorder

Also known as: speech sound disorder, phonological disorder

A speech impairment characterized by difficulty producing speech sounds or phonemes correctly. Articulation disorders are classified into three categories: organic (caused by hearing loss or structural abnormalities), motor (caused by neurological conditions affecting motor control, such as cerebral palsy), and functional (with no identifiable physical cause). People with articulation disorders may have unstable or unclear consonants, making their speech difficult for unfamiliar listeners to understand, which creates significant communication barriers.
