Social Communication Disorder
Also known as: SCD, Pragmatic Language Impairment
A condition characterized by persistent difficulties with the social use of verbal and nonverbal communication. Individuals with social communication disorder struggle with using communication for social purposes, adjusting communication to match context, following conversational rules like turn-taking, and understanding non-literal or ambiguous language. Unlike autism spectrum disorder, SCD does not include restricted or repetitive behaviors. The condition was introduced as a distinct diagnosis in DSM-5 and affects approximately 7% of children with language difficulties.
