Picture Communication Symbols

Also known as: PCS, Boardmaker Symbols

A widely used graphic symbol system for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), consisting of simple, colorful line drawings representing words, phrases, and concepts. Developed by Mayer-Johnson (now part of Tobii Dynavox), PCS is one of the most common symbol sets used in AAC devices, communication boards, and educational materials worldwide. The symbols are designed to be easily recognizable and learnable, with consistent visual conventions across categories. PCS is often used with AAC software like Boardmaker to create personalized communication boards, schedules, and social stories for individuals with complex communication needs, including those with autism, cerebral palsy, developmental disabilities, and acquired communication disorders.
