Speech-Generating Device
Also known as: SGD, Voice Output Communication Aid, VOCA
An electronic AAC device that produces spoken output from text or symbol input, enabling people with speech disabilities to communicate verbally with others. Speech-generating devices range from dedicated hardware (such as Tobii Dynavox devices) to software applications running on tablets and smartphones (such as Proloquo2Go and TouchChat). Users may access these devices through direct touch, switch scanning, eye tracking, or other alternative input methods. SGDs are essential for supporting real-time conversation, social participation, and independence for people who cannot rely on natural speech.
