Transphobia
Also known as: Anti-Transgender Prejudice, Anti-Trans Bias
Transphobia refers to prejudice, discrimination, and hostility directed at people who are transgender, non-binary, or whose gender identity or expression differs from their sex assigned at birth. In digital accessibility and technology contexts, transphobia manifests through AI systems that enforce binary gender classification, misgendering in automated image descriptions, facial recognition systems that fail to accurately identify transgender individuals, and platforms that lack inclusive gender options. For accessibility practitioners, understanding transphobia is important because transgender screen reader users may be harmed by AI-generated descriptions that incorrectly assign binary gender labels, and image description guidelines must account for respectful representation of gender diversity.
