Speech Repair

Also known as: Self-Correction, Speech Self-Repair, Command Correction

Speech repair is the process of correcting or modifying a spoken utterance after it has been produced, either within the same turn or in a subsequent one. In natural conversation, speakers commonly interrupt themselves to fix errors, change wording, or update information using phrases like "I mean" or "actually." In voice interface accessibility, speech repair is important because current virtual assistants typically lack natural correction mechanisms, forcing users to cancel and repeat entire commands when they misspeak or change their mind. This is particularly burdensome for people with motor disabilities who rely on voice as their primary input, or people with speech disabilities for whom repeating utterances requires significant effort.
