Risk-Free Exploration

Also known as: Safe Exploration

Risk-free exploration is a design principle for making touchscreen interfaces accessible to blind users by enabling them to explore the screen surface without accidentally triggering interface actions. On standard capacitive touchscreens, any finger contact can activate buttons, making it impossible for blind users to locate interface elements without potentially changing settings, submitting forms, or navigating to unintended screens. Solutions for risk-free exploration include 3D-printed finger caps and conductive styluses that shield the finger from the screen during exploration while allowing deliberate touch activation through specific gestures, as well as software approaches like requiring multiple taps instead of single touches.
