Gig Economy
Also known as: Platform Economy, On-Demand Economy
An economic model characterized by short-term, flexible, and freelance work arrangements facilitated through digital platforms, rather than traditional permanent employment. For people with disabilities, the gig economy presents both opportunities and challenges: it can provide flexible scheduling, remote work options, and freedom from inaccessible commutes, but often lacks health insurance, employment protections, and accommodations mandated by disability employment law such as the ADA. Earning through gig work may also jeopardize disability benefits, creating a complex tension between economic participation and social safety nets.
