E-Tran Frame

Also known as: Eye-Transfer Frame, Eye-Pointing Frame, ETRAN

A low-technology augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device consisting of a transparent frame or board that allows a person to communicate by directing their eye gaze toward symbols, letters, words, or colour-coded groups arranged on the frame. The communication partner sits opposite and observes where the user is looking. Typically, items are organised into colour-coded groups: the user first selects a group by looking at the appropriate colour, then selects the specific item with a second gaze. E-Tran frames require no power source and are particularly useful for individuals with severe physical impairments who cannot use their hands but have reliable eye movement control.
