NIMAS

Also known as: National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard

A technical standard in the United States that defines a consistent file format for producing accessible versions of print instructional materials. NIMAS is based on the DAISY/NISO standard and specifies how publishers must provide source files so they can be converted into specialised formats such as braille, large print, audio, and digital text for students with print disabilities. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), publishers of K-12 textbooks adopted with federal funds must provide NIMAS-compliant files to the National Instructional Materials Access Center (NIMAC) for distribution to authorised agencies.
