Mathematical Notation Accessibility

Also known as: Math Accessibility, Accessible Mathematics

The practice of making mathematical expressions, equations, and formulae perceivable and understandable by people with disabilities, particularly those who are blind or have low vision. Mathematical notation is inherently two-dimensional and spatial — using superscripts, subscripts, fractions, and nested groupings — which makes it difficult to represent through linear media such as speech or Braille. Solutions include MathML markup, MathSpeak conventions, Nemeth Braille code, auditory cues, and sonification techniques that convey structural relationships through non-visual channels.
