Activity Monitoring
Also known as: Activity Recognition, Activity Tracking
The use of sensors, algorithms, and computational models to automatically detect and track a person's actions and behaviours within an environment. In assistive technology contexts, activity monitoring enables smart home systems and cognitive orthoses to understand what a person is doing, identify when they encounter difficulties, and provide timely assistance. Monitoring can be implicit (using environmental sensors like motion detectors, flow meters, and contact sensors) or explicit (requiring user input to confirm actions). Activity monitoring is a foundational component of ambient assisted living systems that support independence for people with cognitive impairments, older adults, and others who may need context-aware support.
