Link Annotation
Also known as: Link Augmentation, Link Labelling
The practice of adding supplementary information to hyperlinks to help users make informed navigation decisions before clicking. In web accessibility, link annotations may include the accessibility level of the target page, the file type and size of linked documents, or indicators of external versus internal links. For screen reader users, link annotations are particularly valuable because they cannot visually preview a page before visiting it — annotations provide a form of information scent that helps users predict whether following a link will be worthwhile, reducing wasted navigation effort.
