Primary Lateral Sclerosis

Also known as: PLS

A rare progressive neurological disease affecting the upper motor neurons, causing weakness and stiffness in the voluntary muscles, particularly in the legs, arms, and tongue. Unlike amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), PLS progresses more slowly and primarily affects upper motor neurons rather than both upper and lower motor neurons. People with PLS experience increasing difficulty with balance, movement, and fine motor tasks, which can significantly impact their ability to use standard digital interfaces, making assistive technologies and alternative input methods essential for maintaining independence and digital access.
