Photo-based Communication

Also known as: Visual Communication Aid, Image-based Communication

A communication strategy that uses photographs or images as the primary medium for conveying meaning, sharing experiences, and supporting conversation. For people with aphasia, intellectual disabilities, or other conditions that affect spoken and written language, photographs can serve as anchors for storytelling, memory recall, and social interaction. Photo-based communication tools may include visual diaries, automated image capture devices, or photo-browsing applications that allow users to select and share images to express their experiences without relying on linguistic abilities.
