Naming Practice

Also known as: Confrontation Naming, Naming Therapy, Picture Naming

A speech-language therapy technique in which individuals with aphasia are shown pictures of familiar objects and asked to produce the corresponding word. Naming practice is one of the most common and well-evidenced interventions for word finding difficulties (anomia) in people with aphasia. Cues of varying types and strengths — such as the first sound of the word, a semantic description, or the written word — may be provided to help the patient retrieve the target. Research shows that benefits tend to be item-specific, meaning patients improve on practiced words but show limited generalization to unpracticed vocabulary, which makes personalized and context-relevant practice materials important.
