Image-Based Interface
Also known as: Photo-Based Interface, Picture-Based Interface
A user interface design approach that uses photographs, icons, or other visual images as the primary means of interaction and identification, minimizing or eliminating the need for text. Image-based interfaces are particularly valuable for users with cognitive disabilities, low literacy, or limited language proficiency, as they allow recognition rather than recall and do not require reading ability. Common applications include phone books that display contact photos instead of names, communication boards using picture symbols, and navigation systems using landmark images. When designed well, image-based interfaces can significantly reduce cognitive load and improve usability for diverse user populations.
