Rhythm Game

Also known as: Music Game, Music/Rhythm Game

A genre of video game in which players must perform actions — such as pressing buttons, tapping a screen, or moving a controller — in time with music or a rhythmic pattern. Popular examples include Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Dance Dance Revolution, and Beat Saber. Rhythm games are considered particularly promising for accessibility because their core gameplay relies on perceiving and responding to temporal patterns in music, which can potentially be conveyed through auditory or haptic channels rather than exclusively visual ones. Research has demonstrated that replacing visual cues with haptic feedback (vibrating motors on fingers) or spatial audio can make rhythm games playable by people who are blind or have low vision, enabling participation in a popular form of entertainment and social activity.
