Information Retrieval

Also known as: IR

The science of searching for and extracting relevant information from large collections of documents or data. In accessibility, information retrieval techniques such as keyword extraction, text summarisation, and relevance ranking are used to help blind and visually impaired users efficiently navigate and triage web content. Because listening to an entire web page through a screen reader is time-consuming, IR methods can generate summaries, extract key terms, and identify the most relevant sections of a page, enabling users to make quick decisions about whether content is worth reading in full.
