Language Remediation

Also known as: Language Therapy, Language Intervention

Language remediation is the process of treating language disorders through structured intervention designed to improve a person's ability to understand and produce language. In the context of accessibility and assistive technology, language remediation often involves computer-aided instruction tools that use speech recognition, natural language processing, and interactive multimedia to support language development in individuals with conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, specific language impairment, or acquired language disorders like aphasia. Effective technology-based language remediation typically scaffolds linguistic complexity progressively — from basic vocabulary through syntax, semantics, and pragmatics — and adapts to the individual's current level of competence. Research has shown that meaningful speech by school age is the single most predictive element of favourable long-term prognosis for children with ASD.
