Computer-Aided Instruction

Also known as: CAI, Computer-Assisted Learning, Computer-Based Instruction

Computer-Aided Instruction (CAI) is the use of computer software to deliver educational content, practice exercises, and assessment in a structured learning environment. In accessibility contexts, CAI is particularly valuable for individuals with disabilities because it can provide individualised pacing, multimodal presentation (visual, auditory, tactile), immediate feedback, consistent repetition without fatigue, and adaptive difficulty levels. CAI systems for learners with disabilities may incorporate speech recognition for hands-free interaction, natural language processing to understand non-standard responses, and animated visual rewards to maintain engagement. For populations such as children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, CAI offers the advantage of predictable, patient interaction that can be less socially demanding than human-mediated instruction while still targeting communicative and cognitive skills.
