Tactile Imaging

Also known as: Tactile Image, Tactile Image Conversion, Visual-to-Tactile Conversion

The process of converting visual images into tactile representations that can be perceived through touch, enabling blind and visually impaired users to access graphical information. Tactile imaging involves simplifying complex visual content into raised patterns, textures, or contours that are meaningful when explored by hand. Output media include microcapsule (swell) paper, embossed paper, thermoform sheets, and refreshable tactile displays. Automated tactile imaging uses image processing techniques such as edge detection and image segmentation to identify and preserve the most important visual features while eliminating details that would be confusing in the tactile medium.
