Imagined Voluntary Movement-Related Potentials

Also known as: IVMRPs, Motor Imagery Potentials

Electrical brain signals generated when a person imagines performing a voluntary movement without actually executing it. These potentials, detectable via EEG electrodes placed over motor cortex areas, are similar in pattern to the signals produced during actual movement. IVMRPs are a key signal source for brain-computer interfaces, enabling people with severe motor disabilities such as spinal cord injuries to control assistive devices through thought alone.
