Repetitive Stress Injury

Also known as: RSI, Repetitive Strain Injury, Repetitive Motion Injury, Cumulative Trauma Disorder

A group of conditions caused by repetitive movements, forceful exertions, or sustained awkward postures over extended periods, resulting in damage to muscles, tendons, nerves, or other soft tissues. In computing contexts, RSI commonly affects the hands, wrists, arms, shoulders, and neck of keyboard and mouse users. Common forms include carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, and thoracic outlet syndrome. RSI is a significant occupational hazard for programmers, writers, and other intensive computer users. Preventive measures include ergonomic workstation setup, regular breaks, and alternative input methods such as voice recognition software, which can reduce or eliminate the repetitive keystrokes that cause injury.
