Constructivism
Also known as: Constructivist Learning Theory
An educational theory that holds that learners actively construct their own understanding and knowledge through experience, exploration, and reflection rather than passively receiving information. In accessibility and assistive technology contexts, constructivism informs the design of learning environments — particularly virtual environments and simulations — that allow users with disabilities to explore social situations, practice skills, and discover solutions through self-directed activity. However, applying constructivism to users with cognitive disabilities or autism requires careful scaffolding, as fully open-ended exploration may cause learners to miss important educational goals or become overwhelmed by too many choices.
