Menu Selection

Also known as: Menu Navigation, Menu Selection Task

A fundamental computer interaction task in which a user chooses an option from a set of items presented in a menu structure, typically involving locating the target item, moving the cursor to it, and clicking to select. Menu selection performance is commonly measured by task completion time and error rate, and is influenced by factors including menu depth and breadth, item position, visual design, input device, and the user's visual, cognitive, and motor abilities. For users with visual impairments, menu selection can be significantly affected by text size, contrast, menu location on screen, and the availability of accessibility settings such as high contrast mode and enlarged cursors.
