Input Method Editor

Also known as: IME, Input Method

A software component that allows users to enter characters and symbols not directly available on their physical keyboard, particularly for languages with large character sets or complex scripts. IMEs are essential for typing in languages like Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Indian languages where the number of possible characters far exceeds the keys on a standard keyboard. In accessibility contexts, IMEs interact with screen readers and other assistive technologies, and their compatibility is important for ensuring that visually impaired users can effectively compose text in their native languages. Keyboard layouts may need to be created or adapted for languages not natively supported by an operating system.
