Multitouch Surface

Also known as: Multi-Touch Interface, Multitouch Interface, MTS

A multitouch surface is an input device that uses optical or capacitive sensors to detect and track multiple simultaneous finger contacts on a flat surface. Unlike conventional touchpads that rely on a single finger for functionality, multitouch surfaces can recognize complex gestures involving multiple fingers and hands, enabling typing, pointing, scrolling, and gesture commands on the same surface. For accessibility, multitouch surfaces offer both advantages and challenges: their zero-force touch interaction and seamless interface between input modes can benefit some users with motor impairments, but the touch sensitivity may cause difficulties for users with hand tremor who may trigger inadvertent inputs.
