Section 255
Also known as: Telecommunications Act Section 255
A section of the US Telecommunications Act of 1996 that requires telecommunications equipment and services to be accessible to people with disabilities, where readily achievable. Section 255 applies to manufacturers and service providers in the telecommunications industry, covering products such as telephones, cell phones, pagers, and related equipment. If accessibility is not readily achievable, manufacturers must ensure their products are compatible with commonly used assistive technologies. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) enforces Section 255 and handles complaints from consumers who encounter inaccessible telecommunications products or services.
