Computer-Supported Cooperative Work

Also known as: CSCW, Collaborative Computing

A field of research and practice focused on how technology can support people working together, encompassing tools for communication, coordination, and collaboration such as chat systems, shared documents, video conferencing, and project management platforms. In accessibility, CSCW is particularly relevant because collaborative tools must be usable by all team members, including those with disabilities. Inaccessible collaboration platforms can exclude people with disabilities from group work, meetings, and social interaction. Key accessibility challenges in CSCW include real-time text communication for deaf users in mixed hearing groups, screen reader compatibility with shared document editors, captioning for video conferences, and ensuring that collaborative workflows do not assume specific sensory or motor capabilities. Research has shown that designing collaborative tools with disability access in mind often produces innovations beneficial to all users — a classic example of universal design.
