Narrator

Also known as: Windows Narrator

The built-in screen reader included with Microsoft Windows operating systems. Narrator reads aloud text on screen, describes notifications and interface elements, and allows users to navigate Windows and applications using keyboard commands. First introduced in Windows 2000 as a basic utility, Narrator has been significantly enhanced over successive Windows versions to become a more capable screen reader supporting braille displays, multiple voices, and scan mode for web browsing. While it provides essential out-of-the-box accessibility for blind and low-vision users, many power users continue to prefer third-party screen readers such as JAWS or NVDA for more advanced features and broader application support.
