Voice over IP
Also known as: VoIP, Internet Telephony, IP Telephony
Technology that enables voice communication over internet protocol networks rather than traditional telephone lines. VoIP applications such as Skype, Zoom, and Teams allow voice and video calls over the internet at low cost. For accessibility, VoIP presents both opportunities and challenges: its software-based nature means it can be integrated with assistive technologies such as text-to-speech engines for people with voice disabilities, real-time captioning for deaf users, and alternative input methods for those with motor impairments. However, VoIP accessibility depends on whether the platform exposes APIs that assistive technology can interact with, and many mainstream VoIP applications have historically lacked adequate accessibility features for screen reader users or switch access users.
