Alternative Input Method
Also known as: Alternative Input, Non-Standard Input
Any method of providing input to a computer or device that differs from the conventional keyboard, mouse, and touchscreen interfaces. Alternative input methods are essential for people with motor, sensory, or cognitive disabilities who cannot use standard input devices effectively. Examples include switch access (single or multiple switches), eye tracking, head tracking, sip-and-puff systems, voice control, brain-computer interfaces, gesture recognition, humming interfaces, and adaptive keyboards or pointing devices. The choice of alternative input method depends on the user's specific abilities and the demands of the tasks they need to perform. Effective alternative input methods must balance command vocabulary size, input speed, error rate, physical demand, and cognitive load.
