HULOP
Also known as: Human-scale Localization Platform
An open-source indoor navigation platform originally developed by IBM Research to support blind navigation using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacon fingerprinting for localisation plus a topological map server for route planning and point-of-interest data. HULOP has been used as the underlying infrastructure for a series of blind-navigation research prototypes including NavCog, NavCog3, CaBot, AI Suitcase, Inclusive Navi, and ChitChatGuide. Accessibility practitioners encountering HULOP should note that it requires a surveyed deployment of beacons in the target building — so systems built on HULOP achieve metre-level localisation but cannot be used in buildings without that infrastructure. The platform is hosted on GitHub by the HULOP consortium.
