Remote Captioning

Also known as: Remote CART, Remote Real-Time Captioning

A live captioning service delivered at a distance, in which a human captioner (CART provider) or automatic speech recognition system receives an audio feed from a meeting, classroom, or event over the internet or a phone line and transmits transcribed text back to the user in real time. Remote captioning is commonly used when an on-site captioner is not available, when the audience is geographically dispersed, or when a Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing participant joins a meeting remotely. It allows the same captioner to serve multiple events in a day and reduces scheduling barriers, but depends on reliable audio capture and internet connectivity, and can feel less integrated into the room than on-site captioning.
