Cognitively Assistive Robot
Also known as: CAR
A category of socially assistive robot designed specifically to support people with cognitive impairments — most commonly mild cognitive impairment (MCI), dementia, traumatic brain injury, or learning disabilities — in everyday cognitive tasks such as remembering appointments, following multi-step activities, engaging in reminiscence or rehabilitation exercises, and maintaining social connection. Unlike robots that provide physical manipulation or mobility assistance, cognitively assistive robots operate primarily through social interaction: conversation, reminders, prompting, and relational engagement. Accessibility considerations include cognitive load of the robot's interface, personality and communication style, cultural fit, and the ethical tension between beneficial companionship and the risk of infantilising users.
