Hofstede Cultural Dimensions

Also known as: Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions, Hofstede Model

A framework by social psychologist Geert Hofstede characterising national cultures along dimensions such as Power Distance, Uncertainty Avoidance, Individualism versus Collectivism, Masculinity versus Femininity, and Time Orientation. It has been used extensively in cross-cultural HCI research to interpret differences in computer-mediated communication, website design, gaming, and online forums. Critics note that the model can be stereotypical, obscures intra-country diversity, and struggles with intersectional identities — such as the intersection of national and neurodiversity culture — prompting researchers to favour community-embedded alternatives for culturally-situated design.
