Gaokao
Also known as: National College Entrance Examination
The national college entrance examination in mainland China, taken annually by high school students to determine admission to Chinese universities. Since 2017, the Chinese Ministry of Education has formally permitted reasonable accommodations for disabled students on the gaokao, including Braille exam papers and extended time. In practice, very few blind and low-vision students take the gaokao because they must choose between it and the separate 'specialized exams and admissions' system, which admits BLV students only to a narrow set of majors such as acupuncture, remedial massage, and music.
