Ankle-Foot Orthosis
Also known as: AFO
A lower-limb orthosis that supports the ankle and foot, typically prescribed to control foot drop, improve toe clearance during swing, and stabilise the ankle during stance. AFOs come in solid, hinged, posterior leaf-spring (PLS), and dynamic forms, made from thermoplastics, carbon fibre, or metal. They are among the most commonly prescribed orthoses for people with stroke, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, or peripheral neuropathy, and are a building block for more complex devices such as knee-ankle-foot orthoses (KAFOs).
