Reacher
Also known as: Grabber, Reacher-Grabber, Grabber Tool
A reacher (also called a grabber or reacher-grabber) is a low-cost handheld assistive device — typically a lightweight aluminum or plastic shaft 60-90 cm long with a trigger handle at one end and a pair of gripping jaws at the other — used by people with limited reach, mobility, or bending tolerance to pick up dropped objects, retrieve items from high or low storage, and interact with their environment without transferring or bending. Reachers are among the most widely adopted assistive tools for wheelchair users, older adults, and people with back injuries, spinal cord injuries, arthritis, or pregnancy-related restrictions. Their appeal is practical: typical cost under USD 20, no prescription or insurance approval required, minimal training, and easy replacement when damaged.
