Subtle Interaction
Also known as: Discreet interaction
A design approach in which interactions with a device or digital system are intentionally minimized in visibility, amplitude, or audibility to reduce social disruption, preserve user privacy, and support use in public or semi-public contexts. Subtle interactions include low-amplitude gestures, silent or near-silent voice input, eye-gaze control, and wearable micro-touches. In accessibility, subtle interaction matters for users who already experience heightened visibility or stigma when using assistive technology in public, and it reduces barriers to adoption of wearables such as AR glasses, smartwatches, and hearing devices by allowing control without drawing attention.
