Kinesthetics

Also known as: Kinaesthetics, Kinesthesia, Kinesthetic sense

The sense of body position, movement, and muscular effort derived from receptors in muscles, tendons, and joints. Kinesthetics is closely related to — and often used interchangeably with — proprioception, though kinesthesia typically emphasizes awareness of active movement while proprioception includes static position sense. In accessibility and interaction design, kinesthetic feedback underpins embodied interaction, gesture recognition, rehabilitation technology, and haptic interfaces; it is also critical for users who rely on non-visual modalities to orient themselves in space and for the design of assistive technologies that support motor learning and re-learning after stroke or injury.
