Upper-Limb Prosthetic
Also known as: Upper Limb Prosthesis, Arm Prosthetic, Hand Prosthetic
A prosthetic device that replaces or augments part or all of a missing upper limb — fingers, hand, wrist, forearm, or full arm. Upper-limb prosthetics range from passive cosmetic devices and body-powered cable-driven hands to externally powered myoelectric systems that read muscle signals. 3D-printed upper-limb prosthetics have become a major focus of DIY assistive technology and organizations like e-NABLE because children outgrow conventional prosthetics rapidly and commercial devices can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Fit is highly individual — 'every amputation is different' — which is why customization, iteration, and close collaboration between maker and recipient are central to good outcomes.
