Orthotics

Also known as: Orthosis, Orthoses, Orthotic Device

Externally applied devices used to modify the structural and functional characteristics of the neuromuscular and skeletal systems — including braces, splints, and supports for the spine, limbs, hands, feet, and neck. Orthoses stabilize joints, correct alignment, redistribute load, or assist motion for people with conditions ranging from cerebral palsy and stroke to scoliosis and sports injuries. Unlike prosthetics, which replace missing body parts, orthotics support existing anatomy. For DIY and 3D-printed assistive technology, orthoses are challenging because they require a precise, intimate fit and usually rigid materials, which conflicts with the flexible filaments common in hobbyist 3D printing.
