Bicultural Identity

Also known as: Biculturalism

An identity characterised by active participation in and identification with two distinct cultural communities — in the Deaf context, navigating both Deaf culture (sign-language based, with its own norms, humour, and social practices) and the surrounding hearing culture. Bicultural d/Deaf individuals may move fluently between sign and spoken/written language, adapt communication to audience, and experience both the cultural richness and the friction of belonging to overlapping but sometimes conflicting communities. Bicultural identity is one of the four common Deaf identity categories — culturally deaf, culturally hearing, bicultural, and marginal — and is an important concept for designing accessible content, captions, interpreter services, and community platforms that do not force a single cultural frame on users.
