Multisensory Stimulation

Also known as: MSS

A therapeutic and design approach that intentionally coordinates multiple sensory modalities — visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, and kinetic — to support affective well-being, cognitive engagement, and behavioral regulation. MSS has a long clinical history in dementia care (see Multi-Sensory Environment) and is increasingly delivered through digital technologies such as VR, tablets, and interactive art systems. Effectiveness depends on careful calibration: poorly synchronized or overly intense stimuli can trigger fatigue, anxiety, or disengagement, particularly in older adults and users with reduced sensory tolerance.
