Co-Pilot Mode

Also known as: Copilot Mode, Xbox Copilot

Co-Pilot Mode is an accessibility feature, introduced by Microsoft on Xbox in 2017 and since adopted elsewhere, that lets two controllers be combined so they act as a single logical controller driving the same in-game player. The feature was created primarily for disabled players - especially users of the Xbox Adaptive Controller - so that a partner, parent, support worker or therapist can handle inputs the disabled player cannot reach, press or time reliably, without either person having to surrender agency. Co-Pilot Mode is a foundational pattern in shared-control assistive gaming and a conceptual template for emerging mixed-reality shared-prop experiences in which two people operate one coupled artefact.
